This talk will present the current status of global investments in ecosystem services (a.k.a.the "green infrastructure" of the planet)-viewed broadly in terms of nature-based carbon, biodiversity and water. It will then discuss Chinas role in this global picture via its huge and growing range of domestic initiatives, increasing levels of investment, and steady realignment of its national environmental management framework around the organizational concepts of ecosystem services and ecological functions. The talk will conclude with reflections on (i) central and local government and private sector roles in innovative financing for ecosystem services,(ii) some opportunities and potential pitfalls in current national environmental initiatives in China, and (iii) the importance of China linking up,learning from and sharing its growing wealth of domestic experience with the global community.
