In February 2010, the Mertz Ice Tongue (MIT) collapsed and generated a giant iceberg, attracting global focus on it.Presently, the disintegration was primarily reported owing to collision of an iceberg, B9-B.Here, from analysis of both remote sensing and laser altimetry data, we show an increased changing rate (36.9 km2/a, compared to 35.3 km2/a before 2008) in area for the MIT after calving in 2010, an increasing trend of area changing (4.05 km2 to 19.4 km2) from 1989 to 2003 and a decreasing trend (19.05 km2 to 17.6 km2) from 2003 to 2009 for the large rift in east side of the middle of the MIT, an area increase of the other large rift, which was occurred in west side of the middle of the MIT at the end of 2002, to 11.38 km2 at the end of 2009 as well as a moving direction change of~138 degrees of the front of the MIT after the end of 2002,respectively.
