The 17 May 2012 solar energetic particle(SEP) event, associated with a M5.1-class solar X-ray flare from AR11476 located at the western solar limb, produced the first Ground Level Enhancement(GLE) of the 24th solar activity cycle, also known as GLE71,recorded by the worldwide network of neutron monitors(NMs).The SEP event was also registered by numerous instruments on near-Earth satellites and spacecraft, including PAMELA(Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics),a unique instrument which provides accurate measurements in the energy range from a few hundreds of MeV/n up to hundreds of GeV/n.
