Traditional soil infiltration system was confirmed to be a low-energy consumption and low-cost treatment technique for several kinds of wastewater, but the removal of nitrogen was proved evident with comparativedif? culty.VerticalMultilevels Soil inMltration system (VMSI) was modified by combined stuffing (with active carbon, zeolite, sawdust and scrap iron) set for multilevel, and overcome the drawback of traditional soil infiltration system.VMSI exhibited effective pollutants removals because of its excellent effects of biological and abiological. The objective of this paper was to concentrate on the absorption process of VMSI to investigate the mechanism for pollutants removal of VMSI when municipal wastewater was treated through this system.Absorption column ( both reactor and combined stuffing were disinfected with 75% alcohol) was performed in parallel to investigate the proportion of abiological effects in pollutants removals. Results indicated that the average removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand(COD) was up to 65%,82% of total phosphorus(TP),93% of ammonia nitrogen( NH4 +-N),and 84% of total nitrogen(TN).The concentration of NO3--N in effluent was fluctuated at 0.9~2.lmg/L.The operating data analysis showed that the abiological effect accounted for 53%-62% in the initial experiment period and the hydraulic loading rate was the most important factor in pollutants removal.
