The exciting concept of structural control took root when the first building with an active control device was built in 1989.Since that time, it has had a profound impact on structural design and construction. While much progress has been made, it is becoming increasingly clear that, to continue making a major and sustained impact, more clear and specific research directions need to be identified. An attempt is made in this presentation to identify some of these promising research areas. They include implementation-related issues, critical facilities, nonstructural components, and integrated design of actively-controlled structures.
