This paper highlights the latest advances / improvements in equipment design, process technology and control software for thin, medium and "conventional" thickness slab casters.Danieli Davy Distington (DDD) has supplied many such machines to high quality steel manufacturers such as Baosteel.DDD have also supplied new high speed casting machines with speeds at 8.0m/min which have required new levels of automation control for systems such as mould level, oscillation, secondary cooling and soft reduction control.Such high speeds have also resulted in accelerated component wear. The experience gained during these installations has resulted in the development of the "3Q" technological packages and Human Computer Interface (HCI) that can be supplied independently and retrospectively to meet the ever increasing demand for production and slab quality. In addition, the reliability and stability of many critical components have been modified and improved to meet the demanding conditions of high speed casting. When applying these changes to more conventional casting speeds, the improvements have been quite dramatic. The "3Q" suite of technological packages addresses three key principles of Quality,Quantity and Quickness, delivering the highest product quality in the required quantity with the quickness of response required for online control systems.
