ADAPTATION TO UNDERGROUND LIFE IN MANDARIN VOLES (LASIOPODOMYS MANDARINUS)

  Mandarin voles (Lasiopodomys mandarinus) are a subterranean rodent species that are often used as a model for studying subterranean adaptations in mammals.The complete mitochondrial genome,the response to hypoxia in the blood system under acute/chronic normobaric hypoxic treatment,and effects of the light cycle on the visual system were studied.Our results showed that 1) the mtDNA of L.mandarinus is a circular molecule of 16 367 bp,which comprises 13 protein coding,22 tRNAs and 2 rRNAs genes; 2) Under acute hypoxia treatment,the expression of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1a (HIF-1a) increased with decreasing oxygen tension in mandarin voles but there was no such change in Kunming mice.Changes in erythropoietin (EPO) expression were similar for both species but the response in Mandarin voles was more significant.Mandarin voles possessed a smaller mean corpuscular volume and a higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration; 3) In response to chronic hypoxia,similar patterns of expression of HIF-1α,EPO and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were seen in the two species; 4) Light played an important role in eye development of mandarin voles,and the expression of arginine vasopressin (AVP) in brain of mandarin voles did not differ significantly under three light cycle treatments.
