Several new benzopyrano[2,3-b]indoletetracycles were synthesized by the reaction of 2-hydroxyacetophenones or 2-hydroxypropiophenones and salicylaldehyde derivates.The initially formed Knoevenagel adducts under the harsh reaction condition through their tautomeric forms lost water giving rise the formation of the ring closed tetracyclic products.In some cases 3-(2-aminophenyl)chromen-2-one was isolated as a byproduct.
