Multiple constituents of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are usually responsible for the therapeutic effects.The analysis of one or two major constituents can not reveal their complexity of ingredients and the aspects of opposing, combinatory and synergistic bioactivities.Therefore strategies globally considering multiple constituents in TCM are derived for their quality control.In the theory and practice of TCM, the human body is also recognized as an integral system.Metabonomics focuses on the investigation of the recognition and measurement of the entire metabolic reaction of an organism in response to an internal or external influence.The strategy of metabonomics is in coincidence with TCM theory and may play an important role in the mechanism study of TCM.
