Objective Aminoglycoside antibiotics cause miscoding and readthrough transcription in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.The aminoglycoside gentamicin has been used to induce readthrough of premature termination codons (PTCs) in animal models of Cystic Fibrosis and Duchenne-type muscular dystrophy (DMD) to restore the function of proteins with nonsense mutations.However, the long-term administration of gentamicin may not be suitable for human patients because of its strong side effects in secretory and auditory organs.
