High energy ionizing radiation can cause the damage of cancer cells, but also can induce the side effect of health tissue. The radiosensitizer and radioprotectant were useful for decrease the radiation dose and protect the health tissue during the cancer radiation therapy.1 (1) On the one hand, the ultrasmall gold clusters radiosensitizer (Au10-12, Au25, Au29-37)2-4 with glutathione protected layer can enhance the radiation process and amplified the radiation effects, such as Compton scattering and photoelectric effect, and thus leading to the DNA damage and enhanced cancer radiation therapy. Meanwhile, glutathione ligand can activate the glutathione transporter in the membrane, inducing ultrahigh tumor uptake. (2) On the other hand, the highly catalytic nanodots were develop, which can reduce efficiently the H2O2 and Hydroxyl free radical and thus protect the health cells against the high energy ray. These high catalytic nanoparticles can induce the improved survival rate of mice up to 90%, compared with only irradiated mice (0%) via cleaning up the reactive oxygen species and related free radicals in body.5 All these developed materials can cross the 5.5 nm renal clearance cut off, 6-7 can be excreted by renal clearance, and minimized the in vivo toxicity.
