The Isolated Pentagon Rule1 is now widely accepted as a general rule for determining the stability of fullerene cages composed of hexagons and pentagons.Non-IPR (IPR = Isolated Pentagonal Ring) fullerenes violate the Isolated Pentagon Rule,so they are too reactive to be synthesized.Theoretically, the instability of fused pentagons is mainly due to the high local steric strain and insufficient aromaticity.
