Objective: To assess the effect of Medical Nutritional Therapy(MNT)combined with a 4-wk consumption of low-GI formula in the glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes.Design: This double-blind,quasi-randomized-controlled intervention was operated on patients with type 2 diabetes at Xinqiao Hospital.100 patients were recruited and quasi-randomized equally into intervention group(Group Ⅱ)that were supplemented with a low-GI formula at breakfast based on MNT,and control group(Group Ⅰ)which were carried out only with MNT.After the 4-wk intervention period,the glucose,glycated albumin(GA),insulin and C-peptide were detected and the indexes of metabolic and physiological between the two groups were compared.Results: After 4 weeks the intervention group had significantly improved their glycemic control in comparison to control group(GA at 4 weeks 16.2±4.0 vs.18.1±4.7; p<0.05 and fasting blood-glucose 7.4±1.8 vs.8.3±2.4; p<0.05).After 4 weeks,changes of glycemic parameters and total cholesterol were significantly decreased from baseline in Group Ⅱ,while only non-significant decrease was observed in Group Ⅰ,including fasting blood-glucose(-0.64±1.4 vs.0.3±2.2; p<0.05),2-hour postprandial blood glucose(-1.8±3.6 vs.0.8±3.2; p<0.01),and total cholesterol(4.6±1.0 vs.4.8±1.0; p<0.05).Conclusions: Both low-GI formula and MNT induced beneficial effects in type 2 diabetes.Low-GI formula resulted in an effective intervention for patients with type 2 diabetes in assisting control for glucose,and pointed toward a potential effect as a non-pharmacological intervention.
