Atomic oxygen (AO), the most prevalent of the atmospheric species in low earth orbit, can cause oxidation and erosion of space materials as a result of its high reactivity and high flux.Polyimides are used as the outer layer of thermal control insulation blankets, covering most of the external spacecraft surfaces that are exposed to the space environment.Developing protective coatings which can sustain such erosion and still function under the harsh conditions of the LEO environment is therefore needed.
