This study deals with a fouling resistant membrane and spiral-winding of the membrane into 16 inch module to extend the membrane life and reduce operation cost in seawater desalination processes.Membrane fouling can cause severe flux decline and affect the quality of water produced, resulting in an increase in operation cost. This study presents a method to improve the fouling resistant property of the membrane by modifying the surface of membrane with a hydrophilic compound that was tested for permeability (flux) and salt rejection, before and after fouling by organic foulants (flux decline).A correlation between structural and electrical characteristics of membrane surface is investigated.Consequently, modified membranes exhibited improved fouling resistance and an improved ability to be cleaned after fouling compared to unmodified membranes.Especially,High-flux SWRO modified as above showed twice as fouling resistant as the corresponding unmodified membrane.Combined with the fouling resistant property,16 inch SWRO module could further reduce cost of installation and operation. The energy consumed by 16 inch RO membrane is about 5~50% lesser than that of the 8 inch RO membrane.(for Example, saving 56% membrane area due to 2.3 times higher flux, saving 75% pipes and fittings, and saving 54% footprint savings, etc.)
