Hand Foot and Mouth disease (HFMD) is a common disease associated with high morbidity in children and heavy economic burden in some areas in Beijing, China.Etiology surveillance in Beijing showed that Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A6 (CVA16) have been the two major serotypes from 2009 to 2012.However, during 2013 in Beijing, CVA6surpassed CVA16 and EV71 as major causative agents of HFMD, while it decreased dramatically in 2014.The epidemic peak time of CVA6-associated HFMD in Beijing was at summer which is associated with climate factors in Beijing.Compared with CVA 16-or EV71-associated HFMD,high fever, onychomadesis and decrustation were the characteristic symptoms of CVA6-associated HFMD.Pediatricians should be alert to specific clinical presentations of CVA6-associated HFMD so as to provide appropriate treatment measures.New CVA6 variant first appeared in 2012, prevalent widely in 2013 and 2014 and shared a common ancestor with the strains found in Shenzhen, Taiwan and Japan in 2009 or 2011.Since variant strains might cause big HFMD outbreak and CVA6 or other enterovirus are likely to reemerge or emerge in the future,its necessary and urgent to follow the enterovirus variant closely.
