The effects of the pretreatment time as one of the main pretreatment parameters on microstructures, compositions and properties of MAO coatings on magnesium alloy AZ91D were investigated in silicate electrolyte.The thickness,roughness and bonding force tested by the TT230 digital coating thickness gauge, 2206surface roughness measuring instrument (E34-001) and W-92 coating adhesion scratch testing machine.JSM-6701F scanning electron microscope is used to observe surface and measure the elements concentration, as well as CHI600 electrochemistry workstation was used to estimate corrosion resistance and UMT-2MT reciprocating sliding wear apparatus (ball-on-block (disk)) was used to test wear resistance.The results showed that with the increase of pretreatment time, all the parameters such as thickness, roughness and bonding force of MAO coatings increased slowly; but the holes on the surface had a decrease trend.The coating had the best corrosion resistance when the pretreatment time was 5min while that had the best wear resistance when it was12.5min, these related to its changed microstructures and increased Al concentration in the MAO coatings.
