MtDNA heteroplasmy is of interest because it may represent an intermediate state in the fixation of new mutations, and because heteroplasmy has been implicated in cancer, other diseases, and aging.However, little is known about the variability in heteroplasmy levels across the entire mtDNA genome in different tissues within an individual, as previous studies have focused on either a few tissues from many individuals, or many tissues from just a few individuals.
