In preparation of aerogels,aging in mother liquid is a common technique to enhance the strength of network, thus to restrain the pore shrinkage.However, the research of aging in mother liquid mainly focused on how to fabricate shrinkage-free aerogels, and the variation of thermal insulation performance due to aging in mother liquid was seldom investigated.[1-3]In this study, the monolithic silica aerogel without cracks aged in mother liquid was prepared by the sol-gel technology under ethanol supercritical drying.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, different scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermal conductivity test were used to characterize the as-prepared aerogels, and the effect of aging in mother liquid on property of aerogel was studied accordingly.Experimental results showed that the microstructure and the corresponding properties werechanged.The thermal conductivity was enhanced, thus the thermal insulation performance of aerogel was weaken.Therefore, the effluence of aging in mother liquid on thermal insulation performance should not be ignored and must be taken into consideration when aging in mother liquid was used to inhibit the pore shrinkages in aerogel preparation.
