Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination antioxidant therapy in preventing age-related hearing loss (ARHL).Methodology: DBA/2J mice, a recognized animal model of ARHL, were divided into two groups (the treatment and control groups) and monitored from 4 to 14 weeks of age.Mice in the treatment group were fed with a combination of antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E) and a vasodilator-magnesium (Mg).Those in the control group received regular animal chow without supplementation with ACEMg.Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds at 3.5, 7, 14, 28, and 32 kHz were recorded at baseline and every 3 weeks following the initiation of treatment. After the final ABR, ears were harvested, and inner and outer hair cell densities were rendered as percent hair cells lost over the whole cochlea.Inner ear pathology was characterized according to the accepted standards of auditory threshold shifts and hair cell loss.
