The tropical stratospheric planetary waves and gravity waves (GWs) are investigated in a 54-year (1953-2006) AMIP-type climate simulation using the Unified Model (HadGEM2).In order to take into account the small-scale GWs generated by tropospheric convection, a convective GW parameterization is implemented in the HadGEM2.In the simulation, the tropical QBO is reproduced with realistic periods (20-31 months) and amplitudes (25-29 m s-1 for easterly and 5-16 m s-1 for westerly at 20 hPa).
