The anion exchange membrane (AEM) is one of the key components of anion exchange membrane fuel cells that transport anions from the cathode to the anode. The most widely used quaternary ammonium cation based AEMs are generally unstable under alkaline conditions. To circumvent this obstacle and to achieve highly stable alkaline AEMs,cationic groups other than quaternary alkylammonium, including imidazolium cations have been recently investigated.
