In the last decades,increasing interests are paid to the nano-and micro-particles in biological applications.They can be used as detective probes,contrast agents and sensors.The most important applications of the colloidal particles,however,are acted as carriers for drugs and therapeutic biomacromolecules.Therefore,it would be of paramount importance to understand the correlation between the molecular structure and physicochemical properties of the particles and the interactions with cells,the smallest building blocks of tissues and organs.Firstly,the cellular uptake kinetics,pathway and intracellular transportation of the particles shall be carefully studied as a function of particle bulk and surface chemistry,size,shape,and stiffness.The fate of particles,especially the alternation of their chemical composition and physical property,shall be followed inside cells.Their subsequential influence on cell viability,functions,and phenotypes will be carefully evaluated as well.On one hand,this kind of study will provide design criteria of particles,which can have better functions in biological applications such as intracellular drug delivery.On the other hand,the impact of particles on cell toxicity and functions will be evaluated to address the safety issues.
