Hybrid membranes of chitosan(CS)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)(PVP)/1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane(BTEE) were prepared via a sol-gel method for pervaporation [1-3].The membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),thermogravimetry (TGA) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD),scanning electron microscope (SEM) and contact angle meter.Two layered membranes were formed from the cross-sectional image (Figure 1).The thermostability of the membranes was improved when tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was incorporated (Figure 2).The effects of CS/PVP ratio,the content of BTEE and TEOS on the pervaporation performance were investigated via separation of methanol/ethylene glycol(EG) mixture containing 6 wt% methanol.It is found that the swelling degree and permeation flux decreased,whereas separation factor increased with increasing the content of TEOS and BTEE.
