Colletotrichum is one of the most important plant pathogens on economically important crops worldwide. Many species of Colletotrichum cause anthracnose disease of a wide range of important crops.Grape anthracnose is an important disease in vineyards, responsible for mild to severe losses in grapes.Grape fruits are susceptible to grape anthracnosefrom a small green size to the ripe stages, but the symptoms will be visible when only the fruits are ripening.A study was conducted to determine the Colletotrichum species causing grape anthracnose disease in China.Morphology and phylogenetic analysis were conducted to identify the species. In this study multigene phylogeny of a seven gene data set were used for identify species. This analysis coupled with morphology revealed that Colletotrichum viniferum, C.aenigma and a new Colletotrichum species named as C.hebeiense sp.nov.are the causal agents of grape anthracnose disease;the latter being associated with grapes from Hebei Province in China.Colletotrichumfructicola and C.gloeosporiodes which were recorded in earlier studies were not recorded in this study.Colletotrichum aenigma is reported for the first time associated with grape anthracnose.phylogenetic analysis also revealed that Colletotrichum viniferum is a species complex comprising several cryptic Colletotrichum species which needs to be resolved in future.
