The compressive and flexural strengths of concrete with different aggregates were tested for investigate the influence of steel slag substituting partial or whole natural aggregates in conventional concrete. In order to improve the possible excessive expansion of concrete with steel slag aggregates, especially the concrete prepared with only using steel slag as fine and coarse aggregates, the scrap tire particles were used to substitute partial aggregate and its effect was preliminary studied. The compressive and flexural results shows that the mechanical strength of concrete containing steel slag aggregates is acceptable with only slightly decrease of flexural strength and considerable increase of compressive strength. The expansion of concrete by partially substitution of fine steel slag aggregate with scrap tire particles showed obvious decrease. So the scrap tire particles modified steel slag concrete with satisfactory mechanical strength, shrinkage and early-age plastic cracking performance.
