Sensitive polymers with external physical, chemical and electrical stimuli (light, temperature, pH, substance concentration, solvent composition and electric field, etc.) are termed as "intelligent materials" and currently have been used in variety fields of engineering and medicine.Special attention is paid to the temperature-responsive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm), which has a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water at 32℃ and shows a rapid phase transition at the LCST.It can be swollen and solubilized at the lower temperatures on the basis of the hydration of the amide group.At the higher temperatures, the dehydration and the hydrophobic interaction of the alkyl groups cause the collapse of the polymer chains, resulting in the precipitation.This soluble-insoluble transition is quite sensitive, reversible and reproducible.
