The underlying mechanisms responsible for enhanced olfactory perception of congenital blind humans remain severely unexplored so far.In this study, animal behavioral testing showed that long-term visual deprivation at early stage (Rats, postnatal day 0 to 28) or short-term visual deprivation (Mice, postnatal day 21 to 28) could reduce the latency time of food-seeking but increase the odor discrimination performance in rat and mouse. Also, such enhanced olfactory perception induced by one-week visual deprivation could be restored when visual input was recovered.Accordingly,in vivo multichannel recording demonstrated that postsynaptic potentials were amplified and the frequencies of y and β oscillation were increased in mitral cell layer of olfactory bulb and piriform cortex of vision deprived animals. This research discovered the enhancement of olfactory perception and adaptive plasticity of local field potential in olfactory neurons for the first time, which may facilitate the better understanding the mechanisms of cross-modal plasticity and provide insight into clinical treatment for sensory deprivation or brain injury.
