A method for separation inorganic cations by capillary electrophoresis was investigated.Eight cations, including K+,Ba2+,Ca2+,Na+,Mg2+,Mn2+,Ni2+ and Cd2+,could be separated completely in one run with an electrolyte composed 15mM imidazole as the carrier buffer and background absorbance provider and acetic acid as complexing and pH adjusting agent (pH 3.70).Hydrodynamic mode by overpressure was applied at 0.5 psi.for 5 s.The separation voltage was-18kV.Indirect UV-absorption detection was achieved at 214nm.The detection limit ranged from 0.03mg/L (Mg2+) to 0.28mg/L (Cd2+).The calibration curves the quantification limitation 40mg/L for K+,50mg/L for Ba2+,Ca2+,Na+,Mn2+,Ni2+ and Cd2+ and 60mg/L for Mg2+.The repeatability, intraday and inter-day analysis were between ≦ 1.23% and ≦ 2.72% for migration time and ≦2.10% and ≦ 2.22% for peak area. For real samples,no further pretreatment was needed except for dilution. The method was provided for honey and similar matrix routine analysis.
