The AVHRR PFSST data during 1985-2005 were used to examine the interannual variations of sea surface temperature (SST) distribution in the Taiwan Strait during summer through empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The first spatial EOF mode accounts for 85.21% of total spatial variance and reveals cool water masses located along the coastal region near Dongshan Island,Pingtan Island and around the Taiwan Bank. These rightly match the ever reported upwelling centers. While the temporal amplitude function of mode 1 shows a significant interannual variation of such a SST spatial pattern,it exhibits a tight covariance with the alongshore component of the wind stress as revealed by ERS and QuikSCAT data. This is consistent with the notion that a strengthened southwestly wind would favor a stronger summer upwelling in the Taiwan Strait.
