The knowledge of the direction (i.e.,both the alignment and sign) in a minute part of a sample (e.g.,buried layers in thin films) may be of great importance.By linearly polarized γ-radiation the alignment may,but the sign of the magnetization cannot be retrieved.Sign sensitivity in the k-parallel case can be achieved,however,by circularly polarized γ-photons.Principles of nuclear resonant magnetometry are presented together with 57Fe experimental results achieved by energy domain (transmission and conversion electron M(o)ssbauer,CEM) and time domain (nuclear resonant scattering,NRS of synchrotron radiation,SR)spectroscopies.
