Microbial resources are one of the most important natural resources in the world, which is the scientific basis to support the development of biotechnology and life sciences.Culture collections,as the libraries of these living microbial materials, are urgently required to combine by a worldwide alliance.World Federation for Culture Collection(WFCC)is such community with long term conservation and research facilities that brings large number of culture collections together.WFCC-MIRCEN World Data Centre of Microorganisms(WDCM),the heart of WFCC,which once hosted in Australia and Japan, plays a crucial role in providing a database of microorganisms, analysis of the function and establishing a platform of international communication. To date,692 international culture collections from 71 countries have registered to WDCM.WDCM launches an international project called Global Catalogue of Microorganisms(GCM)to construct a data management system and a global catalogue to help organize, unveil and explore the data resources of its member collections.GCM is expected to be a robust, reliable and user-friendly system to help culture collections to manage, disseminate and share the information related to their holdings. It also provides a uniform interface for the scientific and industrial communities to access the comprehensive microbial resource information by providing service about homepage building, online catalogue editing as well as analysis and statistic of microbial strains information.Up to now 71 international culture collections from 33 countries have joined GCM,and more than 335,000 microbial strains have been included in GCM.GCM provide an offering a comprehensive view on the microbiological material made accessible online by public collections worldwide, and the function of Analyzer of Bio-resources Citation. The following design of GCM 2.0 future functions will be discussed:1.GCM 2.00 facilitating deposition of strain.Long term preservation of studied strains underpins cumulative research.Strains deposit in collection must be optimized.Adjustment of computing tools and of adjustment of the strains deposit policy of scientific journals must run in parallel. How can WFCC stimulate the deposit of strains,in consultation with the scientific journals? How can GCM help the authors to deposit their strains in GCM registered culture collections?2.GCM 2.00 as a tool for underpinning the Nagoya Protocol on ABS.The fluid access, transfer and distribution of microbiological material according to the Nagoya Protocol requires adapted procedures with data flows underpinned by appropriate computer programs. This issue cannot be solved without the other stakeholders. Also, good internal management of public and confidential data impact positively on the distinction between public and proprietary domain.3.Updating the WFCC Guidelines and the TRUST system.
