Diosgenin has been an important intermediate in pharmaceutical industry for synthesis of numerous steroids that are widely used as anti-inflammatory, androgenic, estrogenic and contraceptive drugs.This compound is mainly obtained from a few Dioscorea species, but its biosynthetic pathway and regulation in plants have not been fully understood.
