New Criticality and Topological Phases in Shaken Optical Lattices

  We show shaking optical lattice is a simple cold atom experiment that can lead to intriguing new physics of phase transition with new criticality and topological quantum anomalous Hall state.The shaking scheme discussed in our work utilizes resonant coupling between different bands, and therefore, a small shaking amplitude can result in a significant reconstruction of band structure, and consequently, new criticality and topological phases.As shown in recent chicago experiment, the advantage of small shaking amplitude is that the heating is insignificant, which is crucial for successful practical implementation of these proposals.
