Though there have been substantial researches on Ba Jin, there is still space left for further researches. In his fictions, Ba Jin created a large number of memorable characters in the history of modern literature. The analysis of those characters he created has certain realistic significance. Thus, the object of this research is the characters in Ba Jin’s fictions. He created several enthusiastic and bushy characters, among which those with strong sacrificial spirit are undoubtedly of great importance and won prestige and applause for their creator. However, those hesitant and weak characters also endow Ba Jin’s fictions with truthfulness and complexity of human nature. Naturally, researchers paid attentions to characters of this type, but mostly from the aspect of thoughts and culture. Few of them emphasized the aesthetic aspect. In order to have a thorough understanding of Ba Jin, it is valuable to research those insignificant figures in his fictions. This paper is an attempt of aesthetic research on those paradoxical figures. In Ba Jin’s fictional world, he created a flock of figures with paradoxical personalities. Some of them are revolutionary figures like Du Daxin, Li Leng, Li Jingshu, Chen Zhen, Gao Juehui, and Gao Juemin, etc; some are standing at the threshold of a new age such as Zhou Rushui; while some are intellectuals wandering between dreams and realistic, such as Wang Wenxuan, Zeng Shusheng, etc. Diachronically speaking, these figures reflect Ba Jin’s paradoxical personalities. Synchronically speaking, they constitute a paradoxical world in Ba Jin’s fictions. Among them, those with typical paradoxical personalities have drawn great attention from readers and critics, which showed Ba Jin’s writing techniques. One of the characters, Du Daxin, is a typical figure lingering between redemption and perdition of love and hatred. Gao Juexin, another character in his fiction, represents successful figures who have their own unique aesthetic and artistic charisma. Mr. Li, as the narrator of the novel Qi Yuan, displays the dilemmas of middle-age intellectuals through his intrapsychic conflicts. The complexity and paradox in Ba Jin’s mind affected the creation of these figures. May Fourth Movement, which contained both reason and radicalness, is an important source and element of his writing. How did Ba Jin present these paradoxical figures with aesthetic approaches? How did he unfold their paradox from the angle of aesthetics, space-time, and plots? The answers can be found in his combination of narration and character description. He used other characters to reflect the paradox of the protagonist. In addition, the detailed account of paradoxical figures’life experience and their contradictory actions and thinking enhanced the conflicts inside those figures. Space has its own special significance and functions in Ba Jin’s fictions, which accelerates the development of plot. Meanwhile, space, together with paradox of figures, constitutes a symbol for the fictional environment. From the angle of aesthetic acceptance, readers have different identifications of these paradoxical figures.
