Through the exploration of Chinese and Japanese archival literature, this article aims to explore the evolution of Sino-Japanese trade pattern in the early Qing Dynasty and the profound impact of this process on the rise and fall of the southeastern coastal ports. The article points out that in the early Qing Dynasty, the trade pattern with Japan shifted from Fujian and Guangdong to Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. At that time, the governments of China and Japan took part in different maritime trade policies in response to their own domestic political and economic changes. With the implementation of these policies and the development of traders’ trading activities, the commercial status of several major ports in Jiangsu and Zhejiang is further caused to change. By the time of Qianlong, Zhapu developed rapidly in trade with Japan and developed from a small coastal town to the most important Sino-Japanese trade port in the southeast coast of China.
