This thesis proposes a new air-filled parallel plates modified lens antenna based on the Luneburg lens theory to meet the high gain, high precision and low loss demand of the antennas in the band of60GHz, microwave. Detailed researches in this paper are listed as follows:1. By combining the parallel plates theory and the Luneburg lens theory, this thesis proposes a new air-filled parallel plates modified lens, named modified Luneburg lens.2. A preliminary study on the modified lens is conducted by using ray-tracing method. Then the assumptions are studied with simulations using the CST Microwave Studio(?). After the researches, a conclusion is made to summarize the affect on the modified lens to each of the parameters of the air-filled lens, both on the focus ability and the focal distance.3. The design flow of the multi-beam scanning antenna is proposed according to the properties of the air-filled parallel plates modified lens and both single-beam antenna and multi-beam scanning antenna are designed specifically with different modified lens respectively. During the design flow, some of the parameters are optimized and several structure improvements are made to ensure to reach the target.4. Two kinds of modified Luneburg lens are manufactured and one kind of them is measured, whose data confirms the research before because of the accordance with the simulations.
