This thesis attempted to cover three key aspects of translation studies:translators,the translation process and translation reception.By following a netnographic methodology combined with actor-network theory,it started by ascertaining the key human and non-human actors inside the Chinese TV drama(Cdrama)consumption actor-network,discovering their roles and interrelationships and recognizing the significance of Chinese-Spanish fansubbing as a grassroots intermediary for Chinese series,in particular,and Chinese audiovisual content,in general.This dissertation compiled a three-language pair database of culture-specific items included in both professional and amateur subtitles from five different Chinese TV dramas released in the year 2018,which allowed the detection of the most relevant translation strategies in both Chinese-English and English-Spanish language pairs.The most common translation strategies for each specific CSI were also gauged,as well as the possible relations between English translation strategies and Spanish indirect translation strategies.The amounts of cultural loss in both English and Spanish translations were analyzed in relation to the different levels of domesticating or foreignizing tendencies detected.This thesis offered a personalized account of indirect Spanish fansubbers of Chinese audiovisual content,including their perceived difficulties around Chinese culture and language,as well as their preferred translation strategies to deal with Chinese cultural references.A wide panorama of the reception of Chinese content in Spanish-speaking countries was presented.This study created demographic data on Spanish-speaking viewers of Chinese audiovisual content,including a detailed account of their consumption preferences and their attitudes towards Cdramas,(indirect)translation and Spanish subtitles.The repercussions of Chinese drama consumption for fansub followers were also sounded out,discovering positive after-consumption effects from a cultivation theory’s perspective.It also tried to ascertain viewers’ reactions to indirect subtitles,specifically to culturally-loaded elements and the translation strategies applied in Spanish subtitles.Finally,this dissertation strived to discover the possible effects Chinese series might have on the feelings,perceptions and lives of Spanish-speaking viewers.Findings in this thesis point towards Spanish-speaking fansubs and their subtitles as playing a substantial role in the dissemination,reception and further globalization of Chinese audiovisual content in Spanish-speaking countries,and to indirect translation as a possible new standard of quality for Chinese TV drama subtitles.
