韦尔什的小说《猜火车》(1993)书写的不是英国青少年猜火车的游戏,而是一群吸毒青年“选择生活”的经历。作为吸毒者的术语,“猜火车”是指瘾君子们在斑驳得像铁路一样的血管中寻找注射毒品之处。以瑞顿、变态男等为代表的吸毒青年精神空虚,把毒品当成心灵的守护。然而,这种心灵的守护并不能守护心灵,毒品和性欲、暴力相连,只能引发自我的毁灭。《猜火车》用其毒品隐喻,颠覆了斯摩莱特所开创的“理想化的苏格兰”传统,把爱丁堡书写成当代苏格兰人的瘫痪之家。
Welsh’s novel Guess the Train (1993) does not write about English teenagers guessing games, but rather a group of drug addicts’ life-changing choices. As a term for drug addicts, “guess the train ” refers to the addicts in the mottled blood vessels like railroad to find the injection of drugs. Drug abusers represented by Reutton, metamorphosis, etc. are emptied of their spirit and regard drugs as the guardian of the soul. However, this kind of spiritual guardian can not guard the soul, the drug and the sexual desire, the violence connects, can only initiate the self destruction. Guess the train, with its drug metaphor, subverts the “idealized Scottish” tradition pioneered by Smollett to write Edinburgh as the collapsed home of contemporary Scotsman.
