China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC),a part of the grand initiative of the One Belt,One Road(OBOR)is a multibillion dollar project.Being the shortest route for Chinese oil imports from the Middle East and Africa, this project is considered as a game changer not only for China but also for Pakistan as the later will benefit from the transit taxes, development of industry along the corridor highways, energy production, enhancement of the defense(national security and sovereignty)and its significance in the region.CPEC has the potential to divert the Chinese oil imports from the Malacca strait where a potential threat of US Naval sabotage exist in times of any crisis between China and the United States. The relationship between China and India,in security terms,is that of mistrust and suspicion. In this scenario,CPEC can give a permanent relief to China in terms of secure and cheapest route for oil import and business exports. But this project is not an easy task to complete due to security threats in Pakistan. It is these security threats that Chinese administration is concerned most about and it has raised these concerns to the Pakistani government not only diplomatically on different forums but also by rolling back different significant ongoing projects on the premise that Chinese workers in Pakistan are not safe. This research is a qualitative account of the projects included in the CPEC,its significance over other OBOR corridors and China’s need for CPEC in terms of oil imports.Describing the growing Chinese oil needs,it describes how CPEC can provide the most efficient and effective route for the Chinese oil imports from the Gulf, the Middle East and Africa.Meanwhile, the security threats to CPEC are analyzed in detail while taking support from the theory of string of pearls. The security threats to the CPEC,such as Baloch militants,Islamist militancy,Indian involvement in sabotaging the CPEC,killing and kidnapping of the Chinese nationals working in Pakistan is analyzed in detail. The research concludes that although CPEC is a game changer for Pakistan,it is not free of strategic costs including serious security threats. These security threats are primarily based on the Indian discomfort and her involvement in promoting separatist and chaotic political movements inside Pakistan.Besides, other main security threats in Pakistan include Islamist militancy,Baloch insurgency, attacks on Chinese nationals and the concerns of the local residents of Gwadar deep seaport city. The research propounds a four pronged security strategy for comprehensively securing the CPEC projects.
