Intellectual property protection has recently become a widespread topic in the news, however looking at this issue closer, people can easily notice that the news focused on China and did not seem to talk about other countries. This created questions if Chinese IP protection is disproportionately bad compared to other countries or was the Chinese IP protection problem simply blown out of proportion by the media.Because of this I decided to research transitional 16 countries including China to find if IP theft is international problem. After the research,I found that every country has IP theft problems, just on a varying degree. In the countries that I studied only China and Ukraine had economic sanctions put in place because of IP theft and few countries received funding to tighten their IP protection. Most countries however did not get tariffs nor funding and did not seem to do much about IP theft.Additionally,I decided to look at 2 international organizations dealing with the IP protection and found that WTO had TRIPS agreement that focuses only on intellectual property, but the agreement does not seem to be strong enough and WTO does not have an ability to enforce international law.Another international organization that I looked at is WIPO and it only deals with intellectual property issues.Probably the most famous report from this organization is Global Index Report, but after taking a closer look at their reported numbers,I noticed some inconsistencies with probable actual situation, therefore credibility of this report became questionable.I think that this organization should review and improve report criteria for future reports.I concluded that now it seems that the world is not very interested in IP protection itself, but some countries are interested in using IPR misconduct as a tool for de-globalization.Additionally,I noticed that public is not educated enough to realized that piracy and counterfeit goods is a type of theft that every year cost billions of dollars to international companies. In my opinion governments should start paying more attention to IP protection, because that might incentivize local people to innovate and international countries to invest in local economies.
