In this MA thesis I intend to revisit formalist stylistics and explore the benefits we can get from it for todays stylistic study. With the further development of linguistics, formalist stylistics is criticized mainly for its focus on linguistic features in the text without consideration of the factors of the reader and the context, and is thus considered as narrow and limited, inappropriate to the analysis of many kinds of works. But as I see it ,the important notions and the theory of deviation in formalist stylistics can be extended from linguistic levels to some other levels to be fit for stylistic practice at present. In my efforts to revisit formalist stylistics,I will first probe into its linguistic and literary foundations, followed by the introduction of its theories and practice both in literary and non-literary works. Finally,I try to explore systematically the most important notions of deviation, parallelism and foregrounding in formalist stylistics, which can be incorporated into a single notion of deviation, and extended beyond linguistic levels.
