Africa and China relationship was formally established in the 1950sbut trade and cooperation date back over 100 years. Recently, as Chinaseconomy has continued to grow and transform the country into a majorglobal player in all spheres, it has become clear that China increasinglyneeds to secure reliable sources of resources to support its economicdevelopment. Westerns investors have long labeled Africa as risky, unsafeand backward; but it has also been attractive to so called adventurous ascan provide very lucrative retums and profits. African leaders areconsciously recognized the difficulty and discriminatory obstaclesunfairly lay in front of them by western countries (former colony masters)that impede Africa development for decade. As such, and in this new eraof globalization, Africa in particular West Africa countries, are lookingfor a reliable trade and economy partner to enhance its development in arespectful manner. China rise offered an opportunity for a balanced andrespectful trade and economy relationship with West African Countriesthat dignify mutual respect on win-win basis. Traditionally energy, oil,and other raw materials represent the most attractive and immediatebusiness opportunities in Western Africa, but nowadays Africa market asdiversified, consumer demand is going high and social demand ofmanufacturing products is also on rise, especially the demand of locallymanufactured products; therefore investment on manufacturing, infrastructure development, supplies and services are also very importantpart of Africa-China relationship. These areas of investment provide newopportunities for Africa-China cooperation, and could form the pillar ofChino-Africa cooperation in near future. The main obstacles that confront both sides could be summarized asfollow: China distance long way from West-Africa, the buying power ofmany African countries remain low in comparison with western countries, because of history African are more familiar with European productsalthough are expensive but with reliable quality; Chinese manufacturingproducts are new in the market but welcomed because are cheaper in areasonable quality.Notwithstanding the complexity of doing business in Africa, theimpact that Chinas modernization and driving need for resources canhave on Africa can take the form of trade, FDI, etc. Over the past decades,China has become an influential player in Africas economy anddevelopment, not quite successful economic experimentation and morerecent rapid market -based development; China is unique position tounderstand the challenges and complexities facing Africa. In doing business in Africa and establishing a developmentframework, one is confronted with many options. This type of engagement between Africa and China can providevaluable lessons for Africas development. The thesis focus to investigatethe historical context of the Africa and China Cooperation (FOCAC); theneed for a strategic agenda and the role NEPAD could play in thisfriendly but challenging Afro-Chinese relationship. Understanding ofthese issues can help promote business relationships that will enhance thelong-term sustainable development in Africa as well as China.
