The present study is carried out two aims: theoretical and pedagogical. The theoretical purpose of this study is to find out the stylistic characteristics of EST writings, and (2) the writing style of English scientific, including the informative and the descriptive abstracts. The pedagogical purpose is to apply the implications of the theoreticalresults to teaching English abstract writing to Chinese university studentsof science and technology.
For the theoretical purpose, first, a great deal of EST literature wasstudied in seven stylistic characteristics (Impersonal, Formal in Mode ofspeech, objective and Accurate in Statement, Standard in Language.Un adorned in style, strict in Logic, concentrated in Technical Terms).Secondly, ten samples of each variety in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering were analyzed in five linguistic features (tense, voice, modality, relativization and complementation). The two varieties(the informative and the descriptive abstracts) were compared byexamining the numbers of occurrences and the percentages ofoccurrences. The following results were obtained:
1 .The simple present tense and the present perfect tense are usedmost frequently in a descending order of the descriptive abstract and theinformative abstract (D>I), and the simple past tense is in the reversedorder(DD), and thepassive voice in the reversed order (ID). The above findings correspond with the functions of the twovarieties.
The investigation of the linguistic features of the two varieties isrestricted to five areas at the sentence level. Future research into these two varieties should take into consideration other features at the sentencelevel and features at the discourse level. The recommendations made in this paper need to be further tested and developed in actual teaching.
