美国早期荒野文学作品主要是描写建构美国新大陆或直接的森林荒野描写。随着时间步入到19世纪末的现实主义时期,荒野文学则呈现出一派全新的发展。这一时期的荒野文学作品一改往日直接描写森林荒野的传统,而是深入人的内心,探究人内心的荒原。从分析美国现实主义作家西奥多.德莱赛的两部作品中的人物入手,揭示这一时期荒野意象是对早期荒野意象的延伸及升华。
Early American wilderness literature mainly describes the construction of the New World or the direct description of forest wilderness. As time went by the late 19th century realism, wilderness literature showed a new development. This period of wilderness literature changed the past, a direct description of the tradition of the forest wilderness, but deep inside, explore the wilderness of human hearts. Starting from the analysis of the characters in the two works of the American realist writer Theodore Dresser, revealing the image of the wilderness in this period is an extension and sublimation of the image of the early wilderness.
