Through a comprehensive qualitative survey of television viewers - from day-to-day, well-defined programs to late night entertaining programs - the authors explore how different audience groups understand TV talk shows. He strongly believes that such programs are linked to the notion of presumed cultural values and to the hierarchy, and that this relationship is helpful in explaining the controversial history of this type of program.
