The abandonment of shrimp and small fish is a major issue in the deep-water fishing industry in the North Atlantic. In order to solve this problem, different separating devices are being developed to separate the abandoned shrimp and fish in the trawl. Three different grid devices were tested and successfully achieved in West Greenland in 1991 and 1992. During the test, the ability to separate shrimp increased, but the most efficient unit tested in 1992 also isolated a large number of prawns, making it unsuitable for commercial shrimp fishing at this stage of development. Fish with a regular shape, such as seabream, can be efficiently separated by the grid, while the isolation of flat fish, such as tongue ticks, is not effective and the grid blockage is more severe. This paper also discusses the future improvement of separation gate operation and selection ability.
