As a student in the mid-1960s and as a junior lecturer in the 1970s, I joined Peter Ucko and Andrée Rosenfeld in a prehistoric rock art research project in northern Spain. These beautiful paintings and sculptures were created by hunting collectors in the Solutrian and Magdalenian regions 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. Although they are rich in content for their creators, they are now silent and fascinating. The idea that we may be able to pin down the civilization of petrified art that “reads” and separates us from time and space has led to more and more criticism, most of which I agree with.
