1.0 Abstract This article examines a typical orbital transfer flight trajectory: a payload of 545 kg (1200 lb) is fired from the shuttle using the scout’s upper stage (see Figure 1-1). Scout upper classes and payloads were put on a typical 296 km (160 nm) circular orbit of the space shuttle. Scout upper flight trajectory, using the maximum height of the Hohmann orbit transfer flight trajectory. The article identifies the environmental conditions encountered during the mission and the environmental conditions resulting from the shuttle’s interruption of flight (ie reentry into atmosphere and landing). These environmental conditions were evaluated and the impact of these conditions on the equipment shown in Table 1-1.
