Objectives To understand the accessibility of health care, HIV / AIDS attitudes and discrimination, and community perceptions, policies and legal issues related to the risk of HIV infection among men who have sex with men in Beijing. Methods From September 2006 to November 2006, 36 men who had sex with men (MSM) were enrolled in this study. They were divided into six groups and interviewed by means of a pre-designed interview outline. Results Most men who have sex with men (MSM) say they meet their health care needs and believe there is widespread discrimination and avoidance in HIV-infected people in their communities. Most MSM do not want to reveal their identity. They think that Beijing’s environment is suitable for their own work and learning. Only a small number of MSM have heard about HIV / AIDS programs in their communities. Conclusion There is a need for HIV / AIDS advocacy in the community to reduce discrimination and increase coverage of HIV / AIDS programs.
